MODESTY: True Beauty!

Have you ever noticed how those of high rank and professional status are associated with modest dress? We are even more aware that modesty is true beauty in an American culture where lewd or nude means bragging not blushing and in a culture which emphasizes:
  • Sexy, not classy
  • Lust, not love
  • Physical, not spiritual

Ambassadors dress professionally because they represent a monarchy. Christians should dress professionally because the Bible states that believers are His ambassadors who represent Him, the Monarch of the universe, and are part of His royal family.

Modesty is like a beautiful sunset whose simple, warm beauty stands the test of time; whereas, immodesty is like the sour taste of a piece of unripened fruit, plucked before its time to be sold cheaply … a sellout much like Esau who sold his birthright to Jacob.  Here’s a simple syllogism.

A: Christian parents tell son not to buy and view swimsuit mags and calendars.
B: Christian parents go to the beach and publish similar photos on Facebook.
C: The teen one day rebels and the parents wonder why.
D: The pastor attempts to connect the dots for the parents.
E: They de-friend him and white-wash their guilt like the Pharisees.

In 2 Samuel 11, King David viewed a woman from afar by peering from his rooftop at her as she was evidently bathing in water. His reaction was to then sleep with her. Women should understand that this is what they are doing to men, even men as noble and godly as King David whose character and heart are seen in the many Psalms he penned. This is what nakedness can do to a godly man.

Today, most women, who walk and pose almost nude both publicly at pools and beaches and on their social network sites, blame the men for lusting, but they rebelliously refuse to take blame for providing the men with the opportunity to lust. This is extraordinarily bizarre behavior – an attitude that says “I can flaunt almost every private inch of my body, and you men are expected to think thoughts of heaven and the angels”. Men should have self-control, but this is utter hypocrisy. Such brazen behavior by women would have been described as whorish a century ago by the majority of men and women.

The men aren’t any better today. If a man were caught lusting in America like King David a century ago, peering from afar at a woman as she was bathing in water almost nude, he would have been arrested and would have been called a pervert. Such was the high level of decency, modesty and morality in America back then. As America moved from Hollywood movies of flesh in the 1920s to Playboy magazines in the 1950s and through the sexual revolution of the 1960s into the modern era of every variety of unfiltered nudity, sexuality, and perversity available through cellphones and big high definition entertainment screens, many men have become completely desensitized – desensitized enough to the point that even married men pay annual fees to a community pool where they have a front row seat as beautiful young ladies walk around in bikinis that would have made even the women blush a century ago.  And many of these men hardly blink. More and more are turning into ‘queers’ with no desires toward women.  Why? By and large, America’s fathers have become perverts. A young lady in a bikini at the local pool is no longer enough to move them to lust. They could watch for hours without even being phased. No.  That’s too tame for them. Now they have to have complete nakedness, sexual orgies, and sordid bizarre fantasies on a screen before them to make them perk up and pay attention.  And even then, some have to order Viagra or some other drug to find a thrill anymore, they are so ‘burned out’, desensitized, and unmoved. Today, some girls complain that the men aren’t even interested in real women anymore, because most men have become so hooked to internet porn.  And this inability to be ‘moved to lust’ is happening to younger and younger men. Boys now struggle to find anything appealing in the opposite sex, their eyes have become so fat with lust.

America is more accountable to GOD than most nations in all of human history, except for perhaps ancient Israel.  This nation was known for the immense number of Christians in this land from around 1620 to around the early 1900s. How did this happen?  How did America sink so deep to become almost identical to pagan Rome and Greece of ancient times?

How? Gradually. People moved away from wearing bathing suits that consisted of bloomers beneath their ankle-length dresses in the old America where Christianity flourished. And gradually the bathing suits removed the dresses, then shortened the bloomers, then shrunk the blouses and bloomers, then began to slowly remove inches of fabric until today’s swimsuits were borne – many of which consist of only small thongs – swimsuits that would make even harlots blush a century ago. This is where we find ourselves – a nation far from GOD as almost all fathers wrestle with lust on a daily basis … or sadly, if the truth be known, many fathers don’t wrestle at all with lust as they have instead plunged headlong into lust. Strange enough, some are so deep into lust that they no longer have the drive to lust over what was once considered extremely lustful.

For those men who want help in their struggles with lust, be sure to view the article at this link.

So it all happened gradually, and even most church goers see nothing at all wrong with where we are today. Why?

Most do not understand the Scripture or have knowledge of GOD’s view of modesty and nakedness. Most did not tie their beliefs and standards of modesty and morality to the principle of nakedness, but rather to the principle of lust.  Therefore, when men became oversaturated with porn and stopped lusting, they decided that “moderate nakedness” must be “okay with GOD”, because it didn’t “make them lust”.   While Scripture does teach us not to lust, it also teaches us more than that. It teaches us the very important principle that nakedness is a shame, believers must be appropriate in their dress, and both sexes must wear clothing that complements their particular gender (rather than cross-dressing with unisex clothes).

And it is not only women who must avoid nakedness, but men as well.  Even if someone denies that they will “make someone lust”, the principle of nudity is seen as shameful by Scripture; therefore, this message of modesty applies to both genders.

Thankfully, this article was not written as a way of “sharing my thoughts” on modesty, since I personally don’t have time to read everyone’s thoughts on each particular subject of morality. Humans are fallen beings. We have far too many blogs, books, and articles on what people think of a multitude of subjects. Instead, this article is a compilation of Scripture verses on the subject, so that those who truly care about Jesus Christ and His Word can read for themselves what GOD has to say about this subject.  What does He say?

If modesty is true beauty, what is modest apparel?

“Also I desire that women should adorn themselves modestly and appropriately and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with elaborate hair arrangement or gold or pearls or expensive clothing, …”  I Timothy 2:9

Modesty3The word “modest” in the Greek is “kosmios” and means “well-ordered or arranged”. It’s a word which is planetary in its word picture, thus the similar word “kosmios” to “cosmos”.

In other words, just as the planets are all placed in the perfect order and appropriate place so that they don’t collide and their gravitational magnetic force doesn’t pull on each other, in a like manner, we are to dress in apparel that is appropriate, well-planned, and perfect.

Modest apparel draws attention to Jesus Christ and not to our bodies, our bank accounts, or our egosThe Bible also speaks of nakedness and the shame that it brings. Nakedness can mean more than full nudity. It can mean the showing of the thigh or other parts of our bodies as shown in the following verses. Remember how Adam and Eve both felt naked even with their fig leaves? Remember how GOD killed animals in order to clothe them more fully? Here are some passages of Scripture on nakedness.

Vs. 7 “Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves apron-like girdles” … Vs. 10 ” And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” … Vs. 21 “For Adam also and for his wife the Lord God made long robes of skins and clothed them.”  – excerpt from Genesis 3

amy-carmichaelWhen Jesus cast the devils out of a poor violent demoniac, look at the transformation that occurred:

Mark 5:15 “And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.”

The pagans celebrate nudity, while GOD’s Word considers it shameful

“Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen …” – Isaiah 47:1-3

“Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.”  – Nahum 3:5

“Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.” – Revelation 16:15

Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.” – Matthew 25:36

“And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.” – Genesis 9

“And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.” – Exodus 20

“And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office. And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach: And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him.” – Exodus 28

“And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies): Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’s side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.” – – Exodus 32

“So shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners, and the Ethiopians captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, even with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.” – Isaiah 20:4

“And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.” – Chronicles 28:15

“I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich; and white raiment, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness do not appear; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” –

Revelation 3:18

“What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?” – James 2:14-16

“And the ten horns which thou saw upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.” – Revelation 17:16

MODESTY - From the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in GlasgowThe below passage teaches us to avoid placing good looks or exterior appearance above the godliness of a person. We are not to use “good looks” as a basis for choosing leaders. This passage do
es not teach us to dress inappropriately.

1 Samuel 16:1-7
1 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4 And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Come thou peaceably?
5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called
them to the sacrifice.
6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.

The following passage, in like manner, is saying that we cannot judge a godly leader’s authority from GOD or his spiritual leadership by looking at his speech or presence.

2 Corinthians 10:7-11

7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? if any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
8 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
9 That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
10 For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
11 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.

GOD’s Holy Word clearly defines nakedness as shameful and wicked, and gives indication as to the borders of nakedness on a person’s body as seen in the above verses for those souls who seem clueless of what “nakedness” could possibly mean.

The Bible also condemns men and women who attempt to take on the attributes of the opposite sex in their dress or other ways. The Bible tells us GOD made people either male or female and that we must not destroy those boundaries by blurring the lines. Men are to be fully masculine in appearance and deed, and women are to be one hundred percent feminine.

“Have ye not known that the unrighteous the reign of God shall not inherit? be not led astray; neither whoremongers, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor sodomites” – 1 Corinthians 6:9

Notice there are two different words used in the end of this verse. One is the word “effiminate” which is the Greek word “malakos” and refers to a male using their body as a female. The second word is “sodomites” and refers to the Greek word “arsenokoites” which speaks of those who commit sexual sins with those of their own kind such as those today who call themselves lesbians, homosexuals, “gay”, transgender, bi-sexual, transvestites, androgynous, or LGBT.

A woman shall not wear man’s clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.” – Deuteronomy 22:5

“Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.” – 1 Corinthians 11:14-15

“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;” – Romans 1:26-28

“In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shame-facedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becomes women professing godliness) with good works.” – 1 Timothy 2:9-10

“And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.” – Revelation 9:8

Even Hollywood, as evil as they have always been, had dress codes to avoid offending the public back in their early years of film-making. Is it acceptable to GOD for us to dress like the opposite sex in order to get a laugh in a comedy skit or film? Well, that question can be answered with another question. Is it acceptable to commit fornication in a film in order to entertain others? Unlike those who place the arts before morality, GOD commands that whether we eat or drink or whatsoever we do, we should do it to all to His glory.  Drama is not an excuse for us to kiss the opposite sex for “art’s sake” or to emulate other sinful practices for “the arts”.

Beautiful souls are rare, priceless gems shining through eyes of Purity. Brazen souls are cheap fool’s gold, sold in pride for money and attention. The courageous Beautiful inspire lives. The corrupt Brazen destroy lives.

Like Love and Truth, Beauty is a rare gem reflecting the Light, and does not need to parade itself, because the Wise will seek it out. Beauty is defined by Truth and made possible by Love … GOD’s Love.
