Is Hurricane Sandy only just the tip of the iceberg? Also, is it only an economic impact? Should we not also think of the toll it may take on human lives? Far more importantly, what is the spiritual message that our nation and news media are taking away from all of this? Anything? Nothing?
Everyone from the Pope to evangelicals to Bollywood were praying for this storm and the people involved, but is GOD listening? What if GOD is the One who is behind Hurricane Sandy and what if He is very angry … especially with some of those praying, including the evangelicals? Even with the fundamentalist Christians? Is that possible? Is it possible that He could be rising from His Throne, full of wrath, with a vendetta against our nation? Or is this nation too holy and righteous for judgment? Are the evangelical and even fundamentalist Christians so holy that GOD would never move upon this land? Or does He notice that most of their pastors are viewing pornography on a regular basis? Does He see the hearts of pastors who make compromises with the Word He has spoken in order to gain a larger salary and more favor from their adherents? Does He notice how self-absorbed their congregants are, never sharing their faith, but instead absorbing occult and sexual entertainment? Does it anger Him to see so many pastors and congregations throughout our nation who find materialism and adultery to be acceptable sins? And if these more pious members in our country are making Him angry, is it possible that the less pious could be so much more “fuel on the fire” of His wrath?
Washington, D.C. is at a standstill from Hurricane Sandy with only eight days until Election 2012 is to take place. This election consists of two men who do not know the GOD of our founding fathers, the Pilgrims and Puritans, and nobody really seems to care. Just last year, Washington, D.C. suffered from an earthquake tremor, and nobody seemed to get the message. Is this nation really this incorrigible? Meanwhile, the cancellations of crass entertainment events across the east continue to mount almost as high as the waves on the east coast. Have Americans wondered if GOD is not pleased with the trashy entertainment they enjoy? I doubt it. Are American Christians even having such thoughts? I highly doubt it. Are even strict, conservative Christians having such thoughts? Perhaps? Some of them? Nowadays, who really knows. After all, everyone is busy with paying off their latest gadgets and “good times”. Little time exists for self-reflection … and as for thoughts of GOD, they are non-existent, or at best, few and far between for most. I hear the talk of warm blankets, grace, financial aid, and prayer, which are all good, but where is the preaching of repentance?
Is it possible that when people talk about praying that it is just so many words? Or if they do pray that they think it is some sort of service they can render to GOD as payment for all the immorality and sexual vices that fill their day-to-day lives? Is it possible when they render “prayer” and “charity” for victims that they see it as a way to indebt the Almighty in order to gain some more credits to use in their daily pursuit of wantonness and excessive self-pleasure, materialism, and lust? Where is the preaching of repentance in connection with this disaster? Are warm blankets, financial aid, and talk of grace all that is needed?
New Orleans was hit twice by hurricanes, Washington, D.C. suffered an earthquake last year and is currently at a standstill, and now Atlantic City and New York City are bracing for incredible devastation from Hurricane Sandy. Ironically, New Orleans, New York City, Atlantic City, and Washington, D.C. are considered some of the most sinful cities in America by Forbes magazine and Wikipedia.
Are American Christians noticing this pattern? Or is anyone really even “getting” the message? Or are they pretending that GOD’s hand is not being shown and that He has nothing to do with these disasters? Are they heaping to themselves soft-spoken ministers of “light” with soft hands, soft robes, and soft spines to speak “soft, sweet nothings”?
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears …” – 2 Timothy 4:3
While our first thought should be of the victims and how to help them during these disasters, our second thought should be of how far we have strayed from GOD. The standard approach of most Christian leaders of most denominations, however, is to focus on that “first thought” without any mention of the “second thought” … and perhaps not even a thought of it. Most of these religious individuals even state that GOD has nothing to do with such natural disasters. They are almost Deist in their view of GOD. There is no talk of repentance, but only the “good news” and “grace” available to everyone. Sadly, when they say “good news” and “grace”, they speak of a gospel and grace that man has crafted which does not demand repentance. They are not speaking of the Good News and grace of GOD which demand repentant faith and GOD’s ownership of our lives (“we are bought with a price” and GOD has expectations).
Does GOD have anything to do with these disasters? Apparently not if you listen to the media or even most religious leaders. What does the Bible say? Is it possible that a loving GOD could send a Flood upon a planet or fire and brimstone upon a town? And if He has done it before, would He do it again?
“But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, And it shall devour its palaces, Amid shouting in the day of battle, and a tempest in the day of the whirlwind. Their king shall go into captivity, He and his princes together,” Says the LORD.” – Amos 1:14-15
“The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.” – Nahum 1:3
“Out of the south comes the whirlwind: … And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commands them upon the face of the world in the earth. He causes it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.” – Job 37:9-13
“Because I have called, and you refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; Because you disdained all my counsel, and would have none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes When your fear comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. But whoso hearkens unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.” – Proverbs 1:24-33
“It is he that sits upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in: Who brings the princes to nothing; He makes the judges of the earth as vanity. Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.” – Isaiah 40:22-24
GOD’s use of whirlwinds are especially prophesied in relation to the latter days after Israel is brought out of captivity into her land.
“Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD has gone forth in fury – a violent whirlwind! It will fall violently on the head of the wicked. The anger of the LORD will not turn back until He has executed and performed the thoughts of His heart. In the latter days you will understand it perfectly.” – Jeremiah 23:19
“Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Behold, disaster shall go forth from nation to nation, And a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the farthest parts of the earth. And at that day the slain of the LORD shall be from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall become refuse on the ground.” Jeremiah 25:32-33
“Thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will bring back the captivity of Jacob’s tents, And have mercy on his dwelling places; The city shall be built upon its own mound, And the palace shall remain according to its own plan. Then out of them shall proceed thanksgiving And the voice of those who make merry; I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small. Their children also shall be as before, And their congregation shall be established before Me; And I will punish all who oppress them. Their nobles shall be from among them, And their governor shall come from their midst; Then I will cause him to draw near, And he shall approach Me; For who is this who pledged his heart to approach Me?’ says the LORD. ‘You shall be My people, And I will be your God.’ Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goes forth with fury, A continuing whirlwind; It will fall violently on the head of the wicked. The fierce anger of the LORD will not return until He has done it, And until He has performed the intents of His heart. In the latter days you will consider it.” Jeremiah 30:18-24
“I will sweep away man and beast; I will sweep away the birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, and the rubble with the wicked. I will cut off mankind from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.” Zephaniah 1:3
“Our God approaches, and he is not silent. Fire devours before Him, and a great storm rages around him. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.” Psalm 50:3-4
Has GOD changed? Or is it just more convenient to preach the Good News of grace and forget the rest of the Bible?
No Repentance, No Recovery
“Repent or sink” seems to be the message to the American church. It’s their watch and their choice. Their prayers won’t save them unless they repent.
Remember that old cowboy phrase “Save your prayers”. That seems to be the message that the American church keeps failing to hear with each natural disaster that pounds this country.
The American church ridicules separation as “a different era” and holiness as a “cultural thing” in order to avoid repentance, but they do so under the guise of “reaching the lost”. For their hypocritical rationalism, they will find themselves “reaching people”, but to a false “christianity” of their own making.
An American church that refuses to repent can also expect nothing with their prayer for our nation. Rationalism won’t save them. American Christians must stop their emulation of the lost world or lose their country.
Their time appears to be running out.
